Netbooks Contribution to Portable Computing
58The Latest Tech Fad
Netbooks are the most recent addition to the world of portable computing, a world populated by PDAs, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and more. All these wonderful little devices were created with the same goal in mind – to allow people to take their business, entertainment, or hobby with them everywhere they went.
PDAs were the first step. They simplified the tasks of organizing our lives. Since then most of these functions can be found in a combination PDA/phone so that you can get even more productivity out of it. Of course, the tiny keyboards and touch screens are not exactly the most efficient way to enter information. People may be getting really fast at thumb-typing when it comes to text messages, but for anything more than that, something a little more robust might be called for.
A netbook computer has filled this niche very nicely. Smaller than a laptop, it usually weighs less than three pounds, so it’s easy to take wherever you want. It’s also less powerful than a laptop, but then again, a netbook was never intended for that kind of processing. But when you need to stay connected, or when you need to work online from a remote location, a netbook might just be the right answer.
A cell phone may be tiny and sleek, and a laptop may be more powerful, but a netbook is perfect for accessing web-based applications, blogging, messaging, emailing, online research, and other social functions.
